About the Fourth Unitarian Society![]() Our congregation is a diverse group of individuals and families who meet in the warmth of fellowship to celebrate life, create opportunities for spiritual growth and act to further our goals of a world of peace and love, dignity and equality, freedom and justice. We share the ministry of the congregation with the Rev. Dawn Sangrey, our Consulting Minister. Unitarian Universalism is an ethical rather than a doctrinal religion. Grounded in Jewish and Christian traditions, we follow the Biblical injunction to "Love thy neighbor as thyself." Freedom of belief holds the place that is ordinarily accorded to doctrine in some religions. Unitarian Universalists work together for peace and justice in our communities. Who Comes HereOur members come from many religious and non-religious backgrounds. Many interfaith families come seeking a liberal, non-creedal religious education for their children. Some people find meaning in the joint efforts to make a difference in the world; others are searching for a spiritual home where questioning and dialogue are valued. We welcome everyone: singles and families, gay and straight, young and old, abled and disabled. Come as you are! Our HistoryThe Fourth Unitarian Society of Westchester was founded in 1957, and is a member of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations, a continental body with headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts. Following the purchase of the current meetinghouse in 1961 the members have donated much time and effort for renovations, including the creation of a Memorial Garden. After a 47 year history of being entirely lay-led, the members decided in 2004 to engage the Rev. Dawn Sangrey as our Consulting Minister. She has become an integral part of our spiritual life and supports all aspects of our congregational life. Decision MakingIn Unitarian Universalism, congregations make decisions independently from the national organization. Our Board, consisting of 4 officers and 6 trustees, meets monthly. Actions taken at Membership Meetings take precedence over all other decisions. At its October Retreat the Board formalized its Strategic Vision to: Manage Growth |
