Congregation News![]() UUA and 4th UU Policy on ICE
At its February meeting, the 4th UU Board examined UUA materials regarding immigration rights, and the request from Open Arms for Refugees to help them urge the federal government to immediately approve entry of the vetted cases of Afghan people who helped US forces during the war and whose lives are now in danger because of our delay. The Board resolved to support the postcard writing campaign for Open Arms. With regard to immigration rights, we are advised by the UUA that federal case law and previous ICE policy protects places of worship, as well as schools and hospitals, from warrantless ICE raids. ICE is now seeking to change this policy and allow such raids. The UUA has joined a suit to prevent this. The Fourth UU will follow UUA advice in demanding ICE present a specific judicial warrant before our consent is given to entry by ICE officers. Although this is an unlikely scenario, we will keep a printed notice in the cubbies by the front door that any member can present to ICE personnel to make our policy clear. Click here to read the full UUA Executive Message ![]() Scam Alert - If you get an unexpected message that "looks" like it's from our minister or someone else at 4th UU, always double check before you reply or click a link! Be suspicious if the message "kindly" asks you for a "discreet" favor, a password, a directory, bank info, or to buy gift cards. These are common scams. If you are unsure, reach out to the person directly using a trusted email/phone - do not hit reply. Forewarned is forearmed!
Social Action![]() Open Arms for Refugees "Get Them Out" Postcarding Campaign - Update
We’ve seen amazing support so far: over 2000 cards and calls to our representatives; two former refugees speaking out as Open Arms volunteers at local houses of belief; a strong letter to the White House from Congressman Lawler (and two other republicans); public statements supporting our Afghan allies from Congressmen Lawler and Latimer; and coverage in the Journal News, the Military Times and CNN. Across the country, local groups like Open Arms have joined Welcome.US, HIAS, AfghanEvac and others, in pressing their representatives and the White House. Yet, as confirmed by Congressman Lawler's office, vetted Afghan refugees ready to travel to safety remain blocked by the President's written orders. In addition, the White House has asked for a plan by April to shut down CARE, which oversees Afghan relocation. Time is short. Please direct cards, emails and calls to the President, Secretary of State Rubio, and DHS Secretary Noem and urge your friends, especially veterans and Republicans who value loyalty and national honor, to make calls. We must not abandon Afghan allies who stood shoulder to shoulder with our troops for 20 years. Help keep the momentum going. To get White House contact info, and more, go to our site here: https://openarmsforrefugees.org/GetThemOut/ ![]() Open Arms for Refugees - New Joy
This week, Open Arms shared that two Afghan families welcomed babies into the world. One birth was challenging, and volunteers jumped in to offer meals, emotional support, and 24-hour care for the siblings. The baby is doing fine, and the parents now feel they really do have “family” here. In a time of uncertainty, one thing is sure – babies mean that life goes on. We are excited to see where these two babies, one boy and one girl, will go in life. These families add joy to our lives and life to the community. ![]() Domestic Violence Intervention Initiative
The Fourth UU Women's Group is collecting donations for My Sister's Place - a local organization that provides shelter, legal aid, education, child care and other means of support to women who are escaping domestic violence. We have placed a basket in the front corner of the sanctuary for your donations, which we will deliver each month to the MSP offices in White Plains. Suggested donations: gift cards, disposable diapers and baby wipes, feminine hygiene products, new regular-size toiletries, new duffle bags and backpacks, twin bedsheets/bed-in a-bag. ![]() Information and Action for Social Justice
We regularly receive information from organizations like the UUSC (Unitarian Universalist Service Committee), UUSJ (Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice) and UUJEC (Unitarian Universalists for a Just Economic Community) on issues concerning social justice, climate justice, human rights, and more. We'd like to share this information with congregants who are interested and want to take action, so we plan to re-establish our Social Justice Committee. If you would like to become involved, please contact Alan Weger ([email protected]) or speak to Rev. Lane after the next Sunday Service. Stay tuned for details! Pastoral Care ReminderThe 4th UU Pastoral Care Team is here to help and support members of the congregation, reaching out during times of hardship, illness, or bereavement. We can arrange food deliveries, transportation, make a phone call, send a card, offer a candle lighting, and more. If you need assistance or know of of another member who does, please let us know. Details can be kept confidential. The Pastoral Care Team invites you to grow our Caring and Sharing Initiative.
